Issue The Acrobat.exe or Acrord32.exe process remains in Task Manager after you view a PDF file in the web browser. Detail Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader are designed to continue running for a few minutes after you close the browser window in which you viewed PDF files. Solutions Do one of the following solutions: Solution 1: Close all open browsers on your computer and wait 5 to 7 minutes. Solution 2: Open Acrobat manually and use the exit command to close the application. 1. Open Acrobat or Adobe Reader. 2. Select File > Exit. Solution 3: End the Acrobat.exe or Acrord32.exe process manually. -- For Acrobat: 1. Select Start > Run and type taskmgr in the Open text box. 2. Select the Processes tab. 3. Select Acrobat.exe and click End Process. -- For Adobe Reader: 1. Select Start > Run and type taskmgr in the Open text box. 2. Select the Processes tab. 3. Select Acrord32.exe and click End Process. Background information Acrobat and Adobe Reader continually check the web browser for open PDF documents. In certain circumstances Acrobat and Adobe Reader detect that an open document condition exists in the browser when in fact there are no PDF files open. The browser plug-in stores files in the browser cache, which may cause the browser to report an incorrect condition until the browser is closed. In addition, applications with hooks into Internet Explorer may causeAcrobat and Adobe Reader to detect an open browser even when the browser appears to be closed. Occasionally you may be trying to view something that you have updated on a Web page, but the change isn’t reflecting in what you are seeing. Sometimes this happens because the change wasn’t implemented properly but, other times, it’s because the cache in the browser isn’t updating.Internet Explorer 11, like many other popular Web browsers, caches some of the files for the websites that you visit. This helps those sites load faster on your computer. Unfortunately, in rare instances like the one above, this can cause some issues. Fortunately you can clear the cache in Internet Explorer by following the steps in our guide below. The steps in this article were performed in the Internet Explorer 11 version that is part of Windows 10, but these steps will also work in most other versions of Internet Explorer as well. The first part of this section provides a quick overview of how to clear your cache. OverviewInternet Explorer keeps a running history of everywhere you’ve browsed until you manually erase the history or until it hits the threshold set in the Internet Options, General, History Settings page (Figure 1). If you manually delete the browsing history or if it drops off after the specified limit, you may find that you want to review the history that is now lost. So, is there any way to recover deleted Internet Explorer history?Unfortunately, Internet Explorer’s history is a bit of magic with bits being scattered about between the registry, temporary Internet files and the history folder itself – typically located under c:\documents and settings\\local settings\history (Figure 2). Note that this location is one of Windows “special” folders that won’t show you the actual files, but a “pretty” view instead. One would think if the History is deleted, you’d be able to use a 3rd party recovery tool to recover those folders – unfortunately, it’s not that easy.OptionsYou’ve got a few options for recovery – ranging from – “I’ve got backups and will have no issues recovering” to “I don’t have backups so all I’ve got is this crummy index.dat file”.The first option is to use System Recovery or a Backup\Recovery utility. Using a recovery program, you’ll want to recover the above mentioned directory and restart Internet Explorer – the history should be back now.If you don’t have a recent backup, your options are pretty limited. As mentioned above, your typical undelete tool will not be able to recover your history. One thing you can do is to view the contents of your index.dat file. The index.dat file retains a URL history and is used by Internet Explorer to retain the “autocomplete” URL feature which highlights previously visited URLs when browsing a web page. Note that there are multiple versions of the index.dat file – one for retaining cookies, one for cache data and one for your history. The index.dat file you will want to view is under c:\documents and settings\\ Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat.In order to read the index.dat file, you will need to obtain an index.dat file reader. The one I used for this article is called Super Winspy and can be found at the AceSoft webpage. Download and install the tool keeping the defaults. Start up Super Winspy and click on the “Index.dat” button. Enter in the location for the dat file – the default should be. Cache Reader for Internet Explorer Download.
