At long last, “Avatar 2” has arrived. James Cameron has been teasing this sequel for a literal decade, and we’ve watched as Cameron and Co. have developed and given status updates on the four “Avatar” sequels that he put together at the same time. We’ve also watched as release dates have come and gone, but with “Avatar: The Way of Water” now streaming and footage for multiple additional sequels already in the can, we are well on our way to “Avatar 3” and beyond.Since Cameron developed this as a four-film story that continues on after his 2009 film, many may have questions about “Avatar 3” – namely when does it come out, who’s in it, and what do we know about the story? Here’s everything we know about “Avatar 3” so far. Also Read: James Cameron Compares ‘Avatar’ Sequels to Episodic Television: ‘It’s Really One Big Story’ (Exclusive Video)It’s Coming Out in 2024“Avatar 3” is set for release on Dec. 20, 2024, so we have two years to wait until we find out how this story continues. That is the film’s eighth release date overall, as it was originally scheduled to be released in December 2015 before many (many, many) delays. It’s Already Been FilmedThe other good news is that “Avatar 3” is already in the can. James Cameron shot “Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3,” and parts of “Avatar 4” at the same time across an epic production period. With “Avatar 3” already in the can, Cameron and his team now fully turn their attention to completing post-production on the sequel for the next couple of years. The Story Was Originally Part of “Avatar 2”20th Century StudiosWhen Cameron originally announced his intention to make multiple “Avatar” sequels, there were three of them. But in writing the scripts for all three, he said he realized that the story for “Avatar 2” needed to be expanded into two different movies. It Could Be Titled “Avatar: The Seed Bearer”A string of titles for the “Avatar” sequels was leaked in 2019, and Cameron confirmed that they were among many titles being considered for the sequels. In that leaked batch, “Avatar 2” was called “Avatar: The Seed Bearer.”More New Cast Members Will Be Introduced to the Franchise, Including Michelle Yeoh“Avatar: The Way of Water” introduced a number of new characters to the franchise, including some played by Kate Winslet and Edie Falco, and “Avatar 3” will introduce even more.Oona Chaplin (“Game of Thrones”) plays a character named Varang who becomes central to the franchise; David Thewlis (“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”) plays a Na’vi character who shows up in 3 and runs all the way through 5; and Michelle Yeoh fills the live-action role of Dr. Karina Mogue. They’ll join returning cast members Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), Stephen Lang (Colonel Miles Quaritch), Tonowari (Cliff Curtis), CCH Pounder (Mo’at), Sigourney Weaver (Kiri) and more.If “Avatar 2” Failed, “Avatar 3” Still Probably Would Have Been ReleasedSince “Avatar 3” is in the can and already being worked on, CameronWhen Does 'Avatar 3' Come Out in Theaters?
When will we be able to travel to the Na'vi planet and see the latest instalment? With the first two films from director James Cameron considered some of the greatest movies ever made, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Avatar 3. Although the release date for Avatar 3 has not been announced yet, James Cameron has recently completed post-production on the film, bringing it one step closer to being unveiled to the world. Avatar 3 Release Date Speculation While the name of Avatar 3 has not been revealed yet, there have been rumors circulating about the release date. Although nothing is confirmed at this time, fans can't help but speculate about when they will be able to witness the next chapter of this groundbreaking franchise. Avatar 3 Cast Avatar 3 is expected to feature returning actors from the previous films, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver. Additionally, audiences may be introduced to new additions to the ensemble cast, further expanding the already talented group of performers. Avatar 3 Plot As fans eagerly anticipate the release of Avatar 3, they can't help but wonder what the plot has in store. Building upon the story of Jake Sully's struggle between his life on Earth and his newfound connection with the Na'vi people, the third film is expected to explore the Na'vi's fight against encroachment on their planet due to the humans' access to Pandora's resources. Alfred Hitchcock once said that the length of a film “should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder.” James Cameron did not get the memo. Haven’t we suffered enough?Apparently not, since there are rumours circulating that James Cameron wants to release a 9-hour-long director's cut of Avatar 3 on Disney+ after the theatrical release.Yep, you read that correctly – 9 butt-bruising hours. You really wish that Cameron could take Alfred Hitchcock’s advise when the late filmmaker stated that the length of a film “should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder.”Jeff Sneider first revealed on his podcast, The Hot Mic, that Cameron had a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 back in December. Now, he has revealed on a new episode of the podcast what Cameron plans to do with it.“Months ago, I put out a rumour about James Cameron having a nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 that he wanted to finish the visual effects for,” Sneider. “A lot of people were like, ‘Why would the studio pay for that? Why would he insist on doing visual effects if then he’s gonna cut the movie?’ The idea is that Cameron would do all the visual effects for his nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 and then release it on Disney+ as a limited series after the theatrical cut is released.”Oh, good.Granted, this news is to be filed under ‘Rumour that should hopefully not materialize – pretty pretty please’, but the snag is that Sneider is a long-time scooper with a solid track record. So, it can’t be completely dismissed. And whether he's making films or delivering awards speeches, Cameron does have a tendency for not thinking about his audience’s bladders. Or patience. To further put this news into context, the 2009 original was 2 hours and 41 minutes, while last year’s Avatar: The Way of Water ran for 3 hours and 12 minutes. Chances are that the theatrical version of the yet untitled Avatar 3 will be, once again, over the 3-hour mark.James Cameron has already hinted about what to expect with the third chapter of his impressive-style-over-completely-barren-substance Smurfs-meets Pocahontas-in-spaaaaace saga. The director has confirmed we will be getting a few new tribes added into the story, including the fire Na'vi, and we know that Sam Worthington's Jake Sully will not be narrating, but rather Jake's son Lo'ak, played by Britain Dalton, who will take the voiceover duties.Avatar 4 and 5 are both scheduled for 2026 and 2028 releases respectively, with the fourth instalment already partially shot.Avatar 3 is tentatively scheduled to open in theatres on 20 December 2024.Avatar 3 RELEASE DATE: When Will It Come Out?
Avatar: The Way of Water Sign in to your Collider account After years of speculation, rumors, delays, and hype, Avatar: The Way of Water is finally hitting theaters around the world this weekend. Although some skeptics still cling on to the idea that the first film somehow didn’t have any cultural staying power, the original Avatar added to its ridiculous box office gross when it was re-released in theaters earlier this year. The hype has only increased since the first teaser trailer was released earlier this year exclusively in theaters showing Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, and the film has already received serious awards recognition from critical bodies like the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. While Avatar fans may have had to wait a long time to see what James Cameron had been cooking up for all these years, it’s hardly the last time that Cameron plans to visit Pandora. Avatar 3 has already completed a majority of its filming, with a release date set for December 20, 2024. Cameron has also used The Way of Water press cycle to tease that Avatar 4, set to be released in 2025, “goes nuts” and impressed executives who heard the pitch. Producer Jon Landau has taken the opportunity to even hint at the storyline for Avatar 5, which would reportedly explore Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) on an adventure to Earth. With Cameron even talking about plans for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, fans are likely curious if The Way of Water has a post-credit sequence that teases additional installments. Image via 20th Century Studios Avatar: The Way of Water does not have an end credit scene, but you should probably stick around to the very ending to see all the talented visual effects wizards that contributed to the groundbreaking technical achievements. That being said, considering that the film is 192 minutes long, you might want to take a break to head to the bathroom, especially if you gulped down a Coke Zero during your Pandora adventure. You won’t even bother Cameron if you get up during the film itself; he stated that viewers can go to the bathroom “anytime they want” because they “can see the scene they missed when they come see it again.” His confidence isn’t misplaced, as Avatar: The Way of Water is projected to make almost $650 million at the domestic box office. Avatar 3 Sign in to your Collider account On the same day that Disney delivered the first look at a crucial character in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the leader of the Wind Traders, the studio followed it up by revealing another look at the other side of the war for Pandora. Empire Magazine has another look at concept art from the third chapter of James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, showing the signature boats and helicopters used by the RDA’s “Sky People” for travel and warfare. The report also features an interview with Avatar: Fire and Ash production designer Ben Procter, who spoke about what the third movie will bring to the table in terms of action. He mentions that we’re going to see a “battle for the ages” in the film, and a fight that will also make Avatar: The Way of Water’s final sequence look like “nothing but a skirmish.” The first Avatar movie sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) come to Pandora as a human who learns the ways of the Na’vi while acting as an avatar driver for his deceased brother before ultimately moving his consciousness from his human body to his avatar. Avatar: The Way of Water sees Jake as the new leader of his tribe, but forced on the run to protect those closest to him, to defend himself once again from Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and his band of jarheads. Plot specifics about Avatar: Fire and Ash are being kept under wraps at this time, but after Avatar 2 introduced the world to the Metkayina (water clan), Avatar 3 will take the audience to the home of the Ash people while surely providing the most grueling challenge Jake has ever faced. When Is ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Coming Out? Avatar: Fire and Ash has been set for release exclusively in theaters on December 19 later this year, but it won’t be the final chapter in the story of Jake Sully on Pandora. The fourth Avatar movie that is currently untitled and will also see the Pandoran debut of Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, has been set for release on December 21, 2029, four years after Avatar 3. Avatar 5 has also been confirmed to release two years later on December 19, 2031, but this is subject to change as the Avatar movies are no strangers to delays. When it comes to discussions of some of the most successful films ever made, it's impossible to not bring up "Avatar." After all, "Avatar" is the highest-grossing film of all time when not accounting for inflation, with a lifetime worldwide gross of $2.8 billion (per The Numbers). Given that "Avatar" was released in 2009, it has been an extraordinary journey toward its long-gestating sequels. But the wait is nearly over, as "Avatar 2" is finally set to release on December 16, 2022, with "Avatar 3" scheduled for release on December 20, 2024. Subsequent sequels will follow every two years until "Avatar 5." However, even with knowing that "Avatar 2" is on its way, promotional material for the upcoming science-fiction epic has been slim thus far. A teaser trailer is expected to accompany the release of "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," but now viewers can let the hype train leave the station even earlier as "Avatar 2" has an official title. Avatar 2 will be called Avatar: The Way of Water During the CinemaCon 2022 event, Disney finally showed off a teaser trailer for the second installment in the "Avatar" franchise, while also officially revealing its title as "Avatar: The Way of Water" (per Deadline). The trailer itself was revealed to the CinemaCon audience in 3D, and producer Jon Landau offered more concrete information on the sequels and their plans for handling the stories for each.Apparently, each "Avatar" sequel will center around protagonists Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) family, and they will be more standalone in nature as opposed to one continuing storyline over many films. However, Landau promised that each film will feel like part of the saga that is "Avatar" and that their goal is to offer a movie-going experience that viewers will not be able to get elsewhere. Additionally, it was revealed that each "Avatar" film will be initially released only in theaters.Obviously, showing off footage and revealing the official title for the second "Avatar" movie is an encouraging sign that the film will not be delayed again. Fans who are desperately waiting. READ MORE: When is Avatar 2 on Disney? The Way of Water streaming release date. When does Avatar 3 come out? Word from the planet Pandora has once again reached us here on Earth, this time from Avatar lead-actress Zoe Saldaña. While teasing Avatar 3, the actress challenged Titanic as director James Cameron's greatest film. In fact, unexpectedly, she feels Avatar is his real legacy.Zoe Saldaña, who plays the Na’vi Neytiri, was asked about her upcoming projects in an interview with Collider. The Avatar actress confirmed the hype surrounding the next three films, including Avatar 3, which is already in post-production, but she also made a comment connecting the franchise to James Cameron's other behemoth film. This is his legacy project. We all thought it was Titanic, and it turned out that Avatar is his legacy, and for us to be a part of something so groundbreaking and trailblazing, it's like it's a legacy for us, too. When Titanic was released in 1997, it became the most expensive film ever made, which turned out just fine when it became the highest-grossing movie in U.S. theaters upon release. But both those records were broken by Cameron himself with the release of Avatar in 2008. And unlike the big boat disaster movie, Cameron has at least five sequels lined up for the Na’vi. Avatar 2: Way of the Water, which was released in December 2022, became the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. Despite these record-breaking figures, Saldańa's comments were a bit of a surprise to me, as I do think there is more to consider than stats when talking about legacy. Titanic launched the careers of Hollywood alums Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and in my opinion, will always have a place as an established “classic” movie. It is ingrained into pop culture in a way Avatar may never be able to top, with people doing the iconic Titanic pose on every boatComments

2025-04-18Avatar 3 Sign in to your Collider account On the same day that Disney delivered the first look at a crucial character in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the leader of the Wind Traders, the studio followed it up by revealing another look at the other side of the war for Pandora. Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters on December 19. Check out
